White / Yellow Perch
The Yellow Perch run has been slow to start this year in the Annapolis area. Anglers in the Magothy and Severn Rivers are finding many more White Perch right now which is relatively uncommon this time of year. Typically the Yellow Perch will run first looking to spawn in the headwaters of the area’s creeks and rivers. We’ve found way more Yellow Perch on the Eastern Shore in areas like Tuckahoe Creek, Nanticoke River or the Pocomoke River.
Some of the best ways to catch Perch right now are with smaller (1/16th or 1/8th) jigs tipped with either Grass Shrimp, Minnows or Bloodworm. Some new jigs we’re carrying are the FCJ Jigs. They come 2 in a pack and there are 4 fish catching colors to choose from. If you don’t have or want to use live Minnows, you can use Gulp Alive 1″ Minnows in Smelt color. These are fantastic little baits because they’re soaked in Gulp which attracts fish and you can dip used baits to recharge them! Other lures that work pretty well are 1/8th size Kastmasters in Gold color.
We’ve been getting some really hot new products in recently that we’d like to share. Hard Head Custom Baits have come out with skirted umbrella teasers in a bag. How amazingly convenient! The silicone skirts are an excellent alternative to traditional trolling skirts as they are very easy to maintain and they don’t get all slimed up with Jellyfish! They are also offering 12″ and 20″ 4 arm umbrellas pre-rigged with the same skirted grubs/shads!
Areas that have been doing well this past week are further south in the bay. From the Patuxent river down to the Potomac river, Anglers are having success in the mouths of the rivers, especially at night! Jigging 1.5oz-2oz. jigs with 7″-10″ trailers has been productive.
Just remember, catch and release only right now!!
As Spring nears, freshwater fishing is slowly picking up. Anglers are finding success in some of the areas Lakes/Ponds/Reservoirs. Many anglers are catching nice Pickerel holding close to submerged structure in less than 5′ of water. Some of the better lures to use right now are suspending jerk baits, smaller swim baits and lipless crank baits.
Decent numbers of Largemouth Bass are being caught in shallower water recently due to a warm trend over the last few days. Anglers are finding them holding close to submerged structure and on old grass beds in 4′-10′ of water. Lures like suspending jerk baits, lipless crank baits and square bills have all been working well.
Crappie have been caught in similar areas using small jigs like the VMC Hot Skirt Jigs tipped with minnows. Look for them in deeper holes holding close to the bottom near structure.
