AJ, a newer employee at Anglers, is just getting into fishing, and caught several white perch and a nice pickerel in the Magothy River using a gold Mepps #3! So we forced him to join in on the report today!
Rockfish: The best rockfish bite right now seems to be primarily south of the bridge, starting at Tolly Point and Thomas Point, down through Chesapeake Beach to the mouth of the Choptank. Both trolling and jigging have been productive. White umbrellas have been especially effective when trolling! Target channel edges in 20-30 feet of water. For jigging, target channel edges or chase the birds and breaking fish that are down in the lower bay!
Pickerel: There’s still a fantastic pickerel bite in the Magothy River and in the Severn as well! On the Eastern Shore, Tuckahoe and any of the mill ponds will have a good bite also. Use spinners like Mepps, or 3-4 inch paddletails on light jig heads. In open water, jerk baits also work well! Be sure to register for the CCA pickerel championship that started this month, and join our Anglers and Daiwa Calcutta to win even more great prizes! Check out the details here.
Perch: White perch are definitely still being caught far up the rivers and in the creeks using spinners like Mepps or Perch Pounders, but they are also in their winter deep water spots around structure in the bay. Metal jigs work very well for catching them in these areas. Yellow Perch are also starting to show up in the upper parts of the rivers and creeks. Live minnows work very well for them as do small paddletails or stingers!
