Chesapeake Bay Maryland Fishing Report

White and Yellow Perch

Most tributaries off the Northern Chesapeake are currently in the heart of the spawning run.  Most of the Yellow Perch have already come and gone; but in the next week or two we should be able to see some groups of females make their final push.  The White Perch run is just heating up at local hot spots like Hillsboro, Red Bridges, Greensboro, and Beachwood Park.  Our customers and staff members have reported great bites at these locations, as well as other spots in the headwaters of our local rivers.

Right now at Anglers we are primarily catching males, which are generally smaller than their female counterparts, but can currently be caught “at will”.  The females should already be heading up to spawn, look for the bite to remain strong for the next two to three weeks. The best baits so far have been minnows, grass shrimp, bloodworms, and night crawlers.  You should look to fish your bait off a bottom rig with #4 hooks, a shad dart rigged under a bobber, or off of a small spoon.

Rockfish

Anglers, at places like Sandy Point, Matapeake, and other spots off the Bay, has already started to catch and release Trophy Rockfish!  Fish anywhere from 30” to 50” can be caught off bloodworms fished using a 6/0 circle hook on a fish finder rig.  The run of Rockfish up the Bay has just begun, hopefully making for a great early season!
