Cover Image: LJ with G-Eye Jigs and Bob Bruns found fish in from the mid 20 inches to low 30 inches, in 45-65 feet of water!
Rockfish: There’s still a consistent rockfish bite in the main bay! While most people are fishing in the areas of Chesapeake Beach, Solomon’s Island and Point Lookout, fish can actually be caught all over the bay. The key is to target ledges and structure. Most of the big fish are still being caught off of the bottom using 7-10 inch plastics on 1, 1.5, or 2 oz jig heads, or on 2-3 oz metal jigs. Flutter spoons are working too! A new pattern this week though, is that we are starting to mark suspended fish as well. As a result there are some boats out trolling! We have also seen birds working over fish which is unusual for this time of year.
White Perch: White perch are still in deep water in the main bay, often with the rockfish, and can be caught with metal jigs. They are starting to thin out however as they move towards the rivers to spawn.
Yellow Perch: Yellow perch are in the upper rivers and creeks, but are still staging in deeper water. If you have a kayak, it’s a great way to target them! The warmers weather should definitely push those fish into the shallow creeks though, where you can target them from shore. Live minnows are a great way to target them, and there are a variety of small plastics that are effective too. Try stingers from Bust ’em Baits or the new micro shadz from Z-man!
Stocked Trout: DNR has been busy stocking numerous spots in our area! Check out updates here! You can fish for them with power bait trout dough, or small spinners like Mepps #0. Check out a video on how to rig the trout dough here!
